Why So Much Interest in Abandoned Amusement Parks?
![]() |
If you have the keen interest in visiting abandoned amusement parks, you're in the company of many. There are many people who are fascinated with these empty parks. Some of them are interested for business reasons, while others are interested in the folklore that seems to be attached to these areas. After all, you've surely read a mystery novel or seen a movie where a big showdown between good and evil takes place in an empty park. Whether your interest is business related or of a more personal nature, you will find quite a few parks around the country to pique your curiosity.
One of the most famous defunct parks is Dogpatch, which is located in Arkansas. This park was first opened in the late 1960s and inspired by the Lil Abner comic strip. For awhile, the park was wildly successful and expansions were planned. By 1993, the park had closed down. Since that time, the property has been defaced, vandalized and left to ruin. Even today, there is much conflict and negotiation regarding the park and much of the land is being sold in pieces. Many who fondly remember the park in its heyday hope that someone will eventually restore Dogpatch to its former glory.
There are lots of other abandoned parks in the United States. Examples include Dreamland in Brooklyn, NY, Fairy Tale Forest in New Jersey, Astroworld in Houston, Texas, Liberty Land in Memphis, TN and Miracle Strip Park in Panama City, Florida. The list of defunct parks goes on and on. It seems that no matter where you are in the United States there is an empty and neglected park somewhere close by. These parks can be a great historical landmark or simply an empty eyesore. You may be wondering what happens to these disregarded parks. Well, it all depends on who owns the park and the land.
Some abandoned amusement parks are purchased and restored. Or, the land is purchased and turned into something entirely different. With parks like Dogpatch where there is much conflict and trouble over land issues, the parks can sit as is for many years. In these cases, nature overtakes the park, the structures become ruins and the park itself often becomes a place of creepy legends and ghost stories. Even the most level headed executive can't deny that an old, abandoned, rickety park is a little spooky after dark!
